Geriatrics refers to a branch of medical care that focuses on the needs of older adults. Over half the population of adults aged 65 and above may experience three or more medical conditions such as heart problems, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and high blood pressure. Patients with multiple health problems may be prescribed with medications that may treat one disease but then worsen another. This is where geriatric care comes in.

A physician that specializes in geriatrics identifies, assesses, and manages the patient’s unique health care needs, recommends treatment options, and prescribes medications. These medical professionals known as geriatricians receive board certifications in internal medicine or family medicine that allow them to provide special care for older adults with medical complications and social problems.

Geriatric care is a team effort, as team members provide care and support to older people as well as their families. Other professionals who form a geriatrics care team include nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, nutritionists, therapists, psychiatrists, and psychologists.
